Israel Show Cancelled by Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill, the US popstar has cancelled a concert in Israel only three days before she was scheduled to perform there. She said that she had unsuccessfully tried to perform in the Palestinian territories as well. According to the schedule, the former Fugees singer had to perform near Tel Aviv on 7th May, but activists had initiated a social media campaign, in which she was urged to boycott Israel because of its occupation of the Palestinian land.

The singer added that she had wished to schedule another show in Ramallah in the Westback, but it had become a challenge to deal with the logistics. She said on her website that not only did she want to bring her music to this part of the world, but also wanted to play a role in bring peace and justice. She said that it was important to her to ensure that her message was not taken negatively by her Palestinian or Israeli fans for that matter.

Hill said that she would find another strategy to bring her music to all the fans in these regions. She had been pressured by activists to cancel the performance under a campaign called Killing me Softly, a cover song that gave her fame, and one that’s based on Israel policies. Boycott calls have been faced by Israel by academics, artists and musicians including Brian Eno and Roger Waters, who hope that Israel may be convinced into changing its policies because of cultural ostracisation.

However, defenders of Israel have fought against the campaign and there are some singers such as Elton John and Paul McCartney who have done performances in Israel.

It was in the mid-1990s that Hill rose to prominence with the Fugees, which incorporated elements of Caribbean music and hip-hop into R&B and also featured Wyclef Jean, the Haitian American. Her introspective 1998 album called The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was recently inducted by the library of Congress into the national recording registry of important contributions. Hill had written the album while she was pregnant.

Once the album was done, the singer decided to move out of the public eye. But, she re-emerged later with a number of side projects and also served a brief term in prison over charges of tax evasion.
